Valero Plans Work for St. Charles Refinery in 2011

Bloomberg -- Valero Energy Corp., the largest U.S. independent refiner, will spend $200 million to improve reliability at a gasoline-producing unit at its St. Charles refinery in Norco, Louisiana.

The project will reduce the frequency of required maintenance on the unit, giving the company access to a larger amount of processing capacity over the course of two years, Chief Executive Officer Bill Klesse said.

The unit, a fluid catalytic cracker, has the ability to process 100,000 barrels of crude oil a day, Klesse said after attending the National Petrochemical and Refiners’ Association annual meeting in Phoenix.

Refinery shutdowns for "maintenance" often spike gas prices, so I think this is good news.

I hope it works that upset the spring price increase if Valero doesn't have maintenance shutdowns for two years. Good on them.

Joke. They don't want to improve efficiency, as when refinery go off-line, then gas can go up, even when oil is going down. It's all a game.

Oil companies have been investing in "debottlenecking" for quite a while now. They likely would have invested more if it wasn't for Bush-43 signing the energy bill.

Without replacing old technology with new technology, the only thing that really changes is philosophy. You can wave a magic wand and "say" maintenance is not required at the same intervals, but is that really true? Like mechanics say..............you can pay me now or pay me later, but you will pay me.

Sounds like a good thing, but you can be sure Valero will be recouping it's costs by passing them along to the consumer. And then they'll take the tax advantages too.
