Valero Plans Work for St. Charles Refinery in 2011

Bloomberg -- Valero Energy Corp., the largest U.S. independent refiner, will spend $200 million to improve reliability at a gasoline-producing unit at its St. Charles refinery in Norco, Louisiana.

The project will reduce the frequency of required maintenance on the unit, giving the company access to a larger amount of processing capacity over the course of two years, Chief Executive Officer Bill Klesse said.

The unit, a fluid catalytic cracker, has the ability to process 100,000 barrels of crude oil a day, Klesse said after attending the National Petrochemical and Refiners’ Association annual meeting in Phoenix.

Probably a very smart move. If prices remain high and increase as they probably will, avoiding down time will easily pay for the improvements.

Unusual news, in a sector where they say they aren't making all that much money.

* nstrdnvst: I'm sure that refiners pinching refining capacity overall will have NOTHING to do with fuel prices. Ah huh.

** Goatroper: You don't read too much about the refining business, hmmm?

Okay...so don't all the refiners do a certain amount of required maintenance?? How is this newsworthy? It's like saying Americans will change their oil in their cars.

TomT2Lee, "They are getting ready to process that $5 a gallon gas."

If/when gas gets to $5 a gallon, it won't be Valeros fault.

They will have to take it offline to work on it. Since most refineries are running at about 80% capacity that would mean that they are processing about 80,000 barrels/day. I'm sure that this loss of output will lead to higher pump prices.

Nothing like planning 2011. The only news here is that production is down because we have not repaired our plant. Guess we should raise gas prices.

$200 Million is a lots of money to spend on a refinery unless it is profitable... this must mean all the whining about not being able to make a profit was just whining...

We should be refining more oil in the states, which would cut importing from other countries.

In the last 30 minutes ziyulu has posted five articles designed to increase speculator frenzy. Is ziyulu a speculator/manipulator?
Is this because ziyulu hopes to get more amateur SPECULATORs sucked into the SPECULATOR & MANIPULATOR game. As I said before, I have been tracking SPECULATOR postings on this site for weeks. The least number of articles designed to increase speculation on any one day has been two. At the moment, it is five out of five. Experienced SPECULATORs tend to win more profits as more of those not deeply experienced in commodity speculation get into the game. It is very similar to a poker game in that respect. The new players/ SPECULATORs normally get their clocks cleaned and the experienced players/ SPECULATORs increase their winnings. Like I said, it is just like in poker games, suck the inexperienced in and clean their clocks or rather pockets.

After those improvements they will be able to reduce the percentage of crude refined and keep gas prices high, that's the name of the game.
