Don't let CA know. They will have to go out and do it too but the price tag here after environment impact report and fees and design will be $300 million. And it will be the ugliest plate on the road and they will have to sell a billion in bonds to pay for it because its for the kids.

$31M. I request to be hired for this needed postion/function; not only will I do the redesign to eliminate misreading of similar letters and numbers, I will oversee the Operational Management of the tag conversation to include eliminating offensive personalized tags, (which could cause confusion of the reader of a camera picture), I will do a value stream analysis of the PRIDE manufacturing process producing more physical tags at less cost per unit, I will suggest a State Law be enacted to make it illegal to place any sticker or “lens-mud cover [clear or tinted]” on or over the physical tag – so law enforcement (corrected to 20/20) can read the tag at least 50 feet from behind the vehicle, this action will also allow red-light and toll cameras the ability to identify the scofflaw 100% of the time. I’ll assume this Florida State Vehicle License Tag Department’s Directorship (within the Public Safety Division) for only one year (365 days) at one-third of the existing price of $31M which before State and Federal taxes would be net, $10,333,333.33. Ten percent would be donated to the Police Benevolent Society. I have an educational background and experience suited for this task to include an MBA, am 6-Sigma belted/trained, and in progress of my PHD-BA. I can be reached via Gasbuddy as ZeroBoxes. I can be in Tallahassee, Florida within 2-weeks of acceptance to assume these objectives and duties. References available upon request.

Assuming that the new plates will eliminate the troubles of current plates (as discussed. enhancing fees from red-light runners and other motorists who try to drive through toll collection points without paying), how long will it take the state to make-up for the licence plate redesign cost?

Red light cameras actually INCREASE traffic accidents, enough said what the government's intentions are.

This might create a market for electronically customizable on-the-fly plates.

Obviously they calculated that 31 million spent will be easily recovered on the future revenue generated from far more citations issued.

This opinion piece states that it will cost $31 million to redesign Florida license plates so that the state, cities or counties will receive enhanced revenue flow from toll booth runners and red light runners who cannot be effectively identified using Florida's current license designs.
On the subject of red light runners this thought occurs. This technology installed at traffic light controlled intersections was "sold" to the voters on the basis of increasing the safety of the driving public. Apparently, the revenue streams to the jurisdictions installing the red light camera systems is really the paramount reason for the red light camera system installation in the first place since every article one reads about red light camera systems emphasizes the revenue collected or forgone if the article discusses faulty equipment or faulty installation or bad system programming or inadequate maintenance.
The need to get at least 90+% of the users of toll roads to pay the required toll to use the toll road does make sense until the toll road initial construction cost has been payed for. After a toll road has been paid for, the tolls should be drastically reduced to cover future maintenance if not totally eliminated.

They'd be money ahead to bank the $31 million instead of the few (and I bet that;s very, very few) that get away with running camera red lights etc.....

With the economy not really that good, Florida wants to spend $31 million to design new license plates. This is the stupidest idea when the money could be used to improve roads, bridges, or be spent on other needed projects.

If you don't break the law then there is no problem and you can't blame them for wanting to save a buck on new plates. If you do break the law, just man up and pay the fine.

Florida considers $31 million tab to design new license plates. $31 million? Really? ...a simipler design that make the plate easier to read so that the state doesn't loose money trying to fine red-light runners and other motorist who try to drive through toll collection points without paying. ...the new license plates will be easier for cameras and the police to read Hold a contest for people to enter with their design for the state's plate and they can add the plate identifying and camera readablility later. Spend some money now and get much more in return with state fines and fees later. Make sure there is a state code or law that says the plate cannot be covered with a plastic cover that is tinted or colored. The colored cover reduces the ability of the camera to 'read' the plate and compare it to the DMV vehicle and license plate database. Have all states use 'bar codes' on the license plates with laser readers in the police cars and toll booths.. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

Twice I was mailed notices saying that I had run a toll booth without paying in South Florida. On both occasions the picture of the plate showed very plainly to me that it was not my tag number. Both were just "warnings", but I replied in no uncertain terms indicating where they had screwed up. The pictures were black and white, taken at night. Idiots!
