Maryland's governor proposes additional 6% sales tax on gasoline

GasBuddy Blog --

If Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley gets his way he might be the last and only person smiling in Maryland.

This week O'Malley said he wants to raise the state's gasoline tax by applying Maryland's 6% sales tax to every gallon of gasoline. His plan would have a 2% per year phasing in of the tax at the wholesale level.

Maryland's state average today is $3.51 per gallon. Baltimore's average is $3.48 and closer to the governor in Annapolis, if he drives around his neighborhood he could see retail prices ranging anywhere from $3.49 to $3.65 per gallon.

Marylanders currently pay combined federal and state taxes of 42 cents per gallon. If the state legislature approves O'Malley's proposal, that...

carolsgym: "Where does the tax money go. It doesn't go into fixing roads, it goes into the governmetns pocket."

Taxing the people more leaves the taxpayers less choice. If you list the nations of the world, poorest to the left and getting richer as you move to the right, you'll notice that the poorest ones are the ones that are communist/socialist and tax their citizens the most. As you move right in that list, the tax burden on the people drops.

A lower tax burden results in a better opportunity for capital formation, thus investment, thus job growth and thus better economic growth.

Of course, all this is lost on Comrade Obama, for whom ideology trumps doing what the nation needs. Of course, socialist programs put more money (aka power) into the politicians' hands. Remember that every time a politician promises social programs.

Just like Barry "Big Ears" Hussein Obammie this clown thinks the solution to income distribution involves taking from those who have and giving to the lazy "have-nots". Ever think of cutting spending you jackass?

I bet he will lead the way. Once Maryland approves it, I am sure it won't be long till other states join in. Heck, NC raised their gas tax by 8 cents on January 1st.

that's one way to increase funding for the state, increase taxes anyway possible. If only the fuel taxes would go to the repair or replacement of roads and bridges. Too often, the fuel taxes go to other things not related to what the fuel taxes were supposed to support.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

The people get what they vote for. Obozo is a perfect example, but hopefully enough people have gotten wise enough to not believe his BS this time around.

apparently this dude is not running for re-election..

if he is, he needs to call good ol' bev perdue in north carolina, and ask her what happens when another tax is added to gas-perdue decided not to seek re-election, and since the gas tax added on january 1 was greeted with an uproar from the masses, her news was great news for we residents of this state..

Great idea, raising taxes in a down economy. But you have to remember that Maryland isn't really affected by it, because the government is hiring and a lot of gov't employees live in MD.

States may have to do such as federal government is not providing monies to keep up highways. Interstates in KS and MO are going to be toll roads in some areas. Figure that one out.

Some of these politicians beter realize the conditions that the voters are going through. That mostly involves poor economy and high prices. All that add too trouble ,and by raising taxes, it means more trouble. There is a good chance, if O'Malley did increase taxes, he may loose some votes.

Of course with politicians, they can make proposals and after the time is up, like after an election, they could put it off or may not do it at all.
