Should your auto insurance provider spy on you?

GasBuddy Blog -- By now most of us have probably heard from our auto insurance providers telling us that if we install a device in our car that monitors our driving it might qualify us for an insurance discount...

Now, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says speed alert devices, which might give you visual or audible alerts while you're driving, can be effective in reducing speeding when combined with coverage incentives.

With the IIHS blessing, that means insurance companies are likely to push you to install and activate these devices that allow them to monitor your driving, caution you to reduce your speed, and even make it harder for you to accelerate at certain times!

Heck, the government would probably BAN these if the people were think it important enough to tell their congressman – we'll see if we're allowed to protest this.

Unless we do something to stop that, it WILL happen.

But unless they start forcing consumers to use the devices, we think that this is all voluntary right now. It's the same kind of thing as using a rewards or loyalty card at the grocery store. The user is giving the store permission to watch what they buy in exchange for a small discount on selected items. Still, what does this have to do with gas prices?

Navteq even has a great many speed limits missing from their maps they sell to customers like Garmin. JacksonLittle stated Progressive's Snapshot is for "...all their clients..." It's available but not mandatory. Using Snapshot won't help all people, especially those with long commutes and/or those with unorthodox work schedules. Progressive Snapshot FAQ There is no GPS involved nor does it know when you're speeding. It's tracking how hard you accelerate & decelerate, in addition to how many miles you're driving.

Maybe if these things could record how often people cut others off or tailgate it would do some good. These things cause accidents more that just going fast.

If you agree with the auto insurance company to put a device on your vehicle to monitor your driving for cheaper insurance rates then that is your choice but only With the insurance company and Not the government. The vehicle can have alerts, lights and sounds to let you know when the vehicle speed is being exceeded for the area you are in, alert you if you drift out of your lane or an alert for an upcoming stop sign, red light or traffic cameras but not connected to the government or any information relayed by wi-fi. No Big Brother wanted or needed! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!
