Tolls on every road and every mile. Why should I have to pay for roads I don't use. Besides, that way I can avoid paying for roads by driving through the woods.

FUEL TAXES FOR SURE. AND WASN'T A MAJOR PORTION OF THE STATE LOTTERY SALES SUPPOSED TO GO TO HIGHWAY FUNDING. BUS, LIMO, SHUTTLE AND TAXI TRANSPORT FEES SHOULD ALSO PAY UP HERE. AND SINCE THEM BIG TRUCKS TEAR UP THE ROADS PRETTY GOOD (ESPECIALLY WHEN CHAINS ARE REQUIRED), THEY SHOULD BE TARIFFED FOR THE LONG HAULS THEY MAKE ACROSS EACH STATE.

However, it should be put toward roads and not into general revenue (as is now the case).

What would be nice , is, if Ottawa would return to BC , in my case , at least 75% of the gasoline tax money they receive from BC !!! As of instead of 10 % !! I read somewhere that BC sends to Ottawa $ 700 millions annually , and gets back something like $ 70 millions..... A lot of roads improvement could be done with those bucks !!!

fuel tax doesn't work as cars are getting more efficent and hybrid and electric cars tear up the roads but use little if any gasoline.
Milage tax would be hard as how would you seperate miles driven in and out of state? Also seems a bit big brotherish.
Tolls: as much as I hated stopping to pay 40c several times along I-294 near Chicago I must say looking back those were some of the most well maintained roads.
A tax tied to registration is an idea but you have no way of charging out of state drivers for tearing up your roads

Before we look for new source of revenue to maintain the roads lets stop the waste and be smart about it.
Millage Tax - Gas Tax is no longer equitable with all the HYBRIDS and alternate fuel vehicles.
Refer to TIGERPAW46 answer. Great idea. No overhead, no new spending, easy to implement and to enforce.

Big truck that tear up the road not fuel licensing tax then tax for mileage driven per year.

A percentage of tolls, and depending on the governing body traffic tickets and violations(ie town for local roads, county for passing highways and state for thruways)

A fuel tax would raise big bucks , as long as we don't have a group of people running it making $100,000 grand a year .

"With all of these plates on the road and everyone having a drivers license there is NO REASON to add taxes to to Fuel, Per Mile or driving on roadways."
You don't seem to grasp the costs of new roads and keeping existing ones in good repair...

Not tolls!
I like what TIGERPAW46 said; most should be fuel tax, but some should be milage tax, paid when re-registering the vehicle. They can get the odometer reading from the safty inspection report. Having insurance companies pay it makes no sense because they only take our word for what our milage is. Public transportation will also have to pay these taxes and will pass it on to their riders so those without vehicles will still pay part of it. The fuel tax should cover other things like chainsaws and lawn mowers.

Track by GPS and apply tolls based on the roads used. Hit a bank account once a month. No money, deactivate the vehicle.

What should be the major source of highway funding? Fuel Tax. I have lived in many states where I had to have up to $10.00 a day in tolls. With today prices for food and gas I cannot afford this daily.

Fuel sales tax. In Michigan we have a gasoline tax that goes to fix the dysfunctional Detroit roads and additional sales tax added to the sales of a gallon of gasoline that goes to the general fund. How about consolidating all taxes collected from the sale of gasoline and use that to fix the roads? Too simple? Too hard for the special interests to slice and dice the budget?

Fuel tax! That's why our state is always above the national average for gas and our roads still need a lot of work.

How about a Millage Tax. Contrary to belief, this process is already in place ( all the parts needed) but some agency would have to gather the info and regulate the info. Keep n mind all cars built today and in the last century have computers if not GPS's .
Could Obummer do something about the rising price of gas ??
YOU BET HE COULD !
WILL HE DO SOMETHING ??
NO HE WON'T !
Why won't he do anything to reduce the price of gas ?
BECAUSE HE WANTS TO PUSH HIS GREEN ENERGY AGENDA !
Just like the one he spent millions of our TAX PAYER money on and then went out of business.. You remember SOLAR ENERGY stimulus money ? NOW LETS GET TO WORK, SO THAT I CAN GO FISHING. BTW Just filled up boat at Murphys $130.00 smackolas .. Now the fuel prices will go down !
