Chemists create new heat-reflective paint

NBC 33 News -- Scientists at Oregon State University have discovered new "colors" that reflects heat.

Chemistry professor Mas Subramanian first discovered a blue pigment three years ago.

It was beautiful and vibrant, and unlike most other pigments, non-toxic.

But that wasn't the only thing that made the blue so green.

Subramanian recently learned that the dark blue pigment also had unusual chemical characteristics that reflected heat.

If used on roof-tops or building walls the pigment could actually keep structures naturally cooler, dramatically increasing their energy efficiency.

Compared to the blues we know today, like cobalt blue for example, these can reflect at least 40 more than what is being done today," explained Subramanian.

It's called WHITE or Silver paint, it reflects heat and Black paint absorbs heat. What's hotter in the rays of the sun - a White car or a Black car? Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

White things reflect all wavelengths of the visible spectrum. To reflect heat a material must reflect longer (infrared) wavelengths, which are not visible to the human eye so they do not contribute to color. Too bad neither the article nor video explained this.
