Ford to move engine work from Spain to Ohio

Detroit Free Press -- Ford is moving production of a popular small engine from Spain to the Cleveland area as sales of four-cylinder engines rise.

Later this week, Ford is to announce a $200-million investment at its factory in Brook Park, Ohio, so it can make the four-cylinder, 2-liter EcoBoost engine, according to a person briefed on the matter. The move will add about 450 jobs at the factory that now employs about 1,300 hourly and salaried workers.

The factory now makes two larger six-cylinder engines.

Ford and other carmakers are looking to four-cylinder turbocharged motors to help meet stricter U.S. fuel economy rules. And as pump prices again surge toward $4 a gallon, the engines satisfy driver demand for better mileage.

How much fuel is the ship carrying them going to burn through just on the trip from Spain to here? having just retired from 20 yrs in the navy, I have made that trip several times over the yrs, and I'll tell you, "its a lot" and marine fuel is by no means cheap. Then add in the expense of the crews for those ships, for the loaders & unloaders, the docking fees, support services (trash & sewage offload when arriving in port),...etc...etc...etc... the Laws of Economics & Logistics dictates that these cost will eventually be rolled into the cost of the product to the consumer. There is no "legal" way for it to be or have been cheaper to manufacture these engines in Spain and then ship them here than it would have cost to just build them here to begin with. Companies outsourcing like this are taking "kickbacks" from foreign companies & governments to do their business there, and then using tax code loopholes to write off the excess cost on their taxes. Simply put, the companies (or high ranking individuals in the company) are getting money &/or perks "under the table" and then the company takes a deduction on their taxes for the extra incurred expenses, and then "double-dips" by padding the cost into the finished product. It all sounds like a big conspiracy theory, but in truth, its just how the companies play the system against itself to make higher profits on cheaper products. So what's the sudden change? for starters, more people are paying attention to how high their taxes are, and are complaining. Lawmakers are making changes to the tax laws, closing loopholes in the system. doing that on a business level is easier to hide than on individuals, because people are more concerned about defending their own tax deductions than caring what businesses can do, and the businesses aren't going to raise too much of a stink about loosing some of their "bag of tricks" for fear of the public learning of them and the bottomline profits they make after all is said and done. 2ndly (and becoming more of an impact), people are actually starting to care about where the products they consume are being manufactured. Not out of any sense of patriotism, but because every foreign product represents a job they themselves could have had, if they product was manufactured here. This is definitely prevalent with high cost products that use to be manufactured heavily here in the US. As a final point, a few hundred jobs created here is a drop in the bucket compared to what these companies need to do. They need to quit playing "Scrouge" and get back to creating thousands of jobs at the time. I'm actually disappointed to see people getting excited over a few jobs created here, a couple dozen there, a couple hundred here, 450 there. In the past 10 years, we have lost over "8 Million" jobs in the US. These "drop in the bucket" numbers of returning or new jobs is akin to a line of Martin Sheen's in the movie Apocalypse Now, "...we cut the in half with a machine gun, and then patched them up with a band-aid, and sent on their way...". We need thousands of jobs at the time. The major companies and corporations of the country need to wake up to reality. If we don't have jobs, then we can't keep buying what they're selling.
