Unfortunately, all the long term damage to marine life is out of sight so it is also out of mind now, as all our representatives and politicians are on to more "important" matters.

Better have a good plan ready, Mexico is about to do deep sea oil exploration on their own. This is not done by any experienced international oil company. It will be close to the US Mexican maritime border.
Who is going to take care this when a spill occurs?

It was finger pointing at its finest.
BP was more concerned about the welfare of the employees, than the welfare or the world, Eco-system, environment, & welfare/health of everyone who consumes food from the Gulf.
State state I affairs for the US and world that day.

As BP and the world discovered, just multiplying a response when dealing with a larger situation just doesn't work. The first comparison to come to mind is an massive accident with multiple vehicles has to be dealt with vastly different than one between 2 vehicles.
The situation of the Deepwater Horizon was the bus, 10 cars and a semi accident and they tried to deal with it as if it was several smaller ones. It didn't work but if one thing did come out of the entire mess, oil companies and world governments are now aware of it. Hopefully, they never have to deal with such a situation again but that's unlikely.

Here is the problem I see...
1. Do we leave the clean up in the hands of the company(s) responsible for the disaster, who most likely have not planned for such an event?
2. Does the Federal and State governments handle the disaster and send the bill to the company(s) responsible.
If you believe in a smaller government and a reduced budget, then you chose option #1 hoping the company(s) will actually do a good job.
If you believe the government should be prepared to handle large scale disasters, they you chose option #2 and hope the government will actually do a good job.
Does this sound like a loosing proposition?

It was truly a debacle, and there are parts of the shoreline (200 miles) that are still not cleaned up!
