Unfortunately, all the long term damage to marine life is out of sight so it is also out of mind now, as all our representatives and politicians are on to more "important" matters.

And like all previous politicians, the recommendations from these scientists will be ignored.

Better have a good plan ready, Mexico is about to do deep sea oil exploration on their own. This is not done by any experienced international oil company. It will be close to the US Mexican maritime border.
Who is going to take care this when a spill occurs?

The cost of this disaster is just too great. These poisons, both oil and dispersants, have destroyed the Gulf. BP get away with only a wrist slap....

"As the Deepwater Horizon spill unfolded, you would hear folks saying things like ‘we all know what happens when oil and water mix; the oil floats.' That wasn't the whole story. And that oversimplification initially sent us down an incorrect path full of assumptions and actions that were not the best possible use of our time and effort." ============== True, very true.

It was finger pointing at its finest.
BP was more concerned about the welfare of the employees, than the welfare or the world, Eco-system, environment, & welfare/health of everyone who consumes food from the Gulf.
State state I affairs for the US and world that day.

As BP and the world discovered, just multiplying a response when dealing with a larger situation just doesn't work. The first comparison to come to mind is an massive accident with multiple vehicles has to be dealt with vastly different than one between 2 vehicles. The situation of the Deepwater Horizon was the bus, 10 cars and a semi accident and they tried to deal with it as if it was several smaller ones. It didn't work but if one thing did come out of the entire mess, oil companies and world governments are now aware of it. Hopefully, they never have to deal with such a situation again but that's unlikely.

Here is the problem I see... 1. Do we leave the clean up in the hands of the company(s) responsible for the disaster, who most likely have not planned for such an event? 2. Does the Federal and State governments handle the disaster and send the bill to the company(s) responsible.
If you believe in a smaller government and a reduced budget, then you chose option #1 hoping the company(s) will actually do a good job.
If you believe the government should be prepared to handle large scale disasters, they you chose option #2 and hope the government will actually do a good job.
Does this sound like a loosing proposition?

Yes, we should continue to study the data and learn from it so we are better prepared if it happens again.

It was truly a debacle, and there are parts of the shoreline (200 miles) that are still not cleaned up!

"Our hope is that this paper brings attention to the fact that deep-water oil spill response efforts must be extensively revised so that we do not repeat the same mistakes and are better prepared to assess important ecological impacts from day one," Joye said.

No kidding! With the photos of the mutant shrimp and sores on dolphins and dark stripes on snapper makes me want to skip seafood for a while. Specially any canned shrimp or seafood...
