New EPA rule could upend high court runoff case

AP -- The issue was a new rule from the Environmental Protection Agency dealing with runoff from logging roads. As it happened, the regulation was issued on Friday, less than 72 hours before a Supreme Court argument dealing with the same topic. The regulation probably will keep the court from issuing a meaningful ruling in the dispute between timber interests and environmentalists.

The new regulation makes clear that the muddy water coming off a logging road should be considered the same as water running off a farm field — not like the water that flows out a pipe from a factory and requires a special permit.

Hilarious how many people took the article to mean just the opposite of what it said, apparently because they're unable to see anything that doesn't fit with their prejudices.

no duh. : ) water running off a mountain from a road is not the same as runoff from a factory allowing waste water to run into the waterways used to make drinkable water. and all they need to do is pass a bill/law that requires mining companies to build roads that don't allow excess run off directly into the streams/creeks/rivers. it has been done for over 2 centuries in kentucky/west virginia and many many other states.since the beginning of hydraulic mining was found to release all kinds of nasty underground chemicals/minerals .....shall we say poisoning cattle/livestock. if you ask me the epa is way behind on this one.

Does that mean the states will have to stop using salt on the roads? Salt is much worse going into the rivers than mud.

Hard to believe a Supreme Court decision could be that slanted.

@clermont40miles keeps saying "Green is Red".

He's right. Green is the color of money and Red is the color of the Republican Party.

Class dismissed.

It should be regulated and held accountable! God knows they don't have enough sense to regulate themselves!

If cows or horses use the road and if transport trucks use the rad, then poop and oil leaks in the runoff, if into a creek, could pollute the waterway. People might drink the stuff and get sick or die. Kids understand this.

Another example of the current administration enacting rules without the blessing of actual enacted law to support them... yet the rules can and often have the same effect as LAW. Most have been made arbitarily with little support from the public.

How about harvesting lumber responsibly instead of clear-cutting the whole side of the mountain, @TBRR? Maybe that way, you won't get so many mudslides when it rains.

And as for work ethic, you really think that someone who makes millions by tapping a few keystrokes for a hedge fund is working hard? Time to rethink your values.

Seriously.

Hey everyone, I must be psychic! I foresaw that a bunch of Internet trolls would post nonsense messages on this forum about disbanding the EPA.

Next, I'm off to come up with next week's Powerball numbers.

It is just runoff from the landscape in the forest and not some sort of hazardous chemical.
