Especially with the rise of hybrids and other engine options, you might find yourself paying a lot more up front for better mileage, then having to calculate whether you'll recoup that down the road.

Take the Ford F-150, which you can buy with the Ecoboost V-6 or the 5.0-liter V-8. According to the EPA, you'd save between $200 and $550 a year going EcoBoost (depending on whether you fill up with E85 or not, which greatly dings fuel economy). But the EcoBoost engine costs about $1000 more out the door. Depending on the price of gas and how much ethanol you use, you're looking at between two and five years to pay yourself back.

This is, unfortunately, what everyone should be following . . . it's what every one of us should have learned from mom and dad years ago. They should teach stuff like this in High School. Maybe something like a personal finance class - I would bet most kids graduating from High School these days are unfamiliar with these points, or even how to balance a checkbook.

I don't put many miles on it a year and since I have the oil changed according to the calendar instead of miles, it's not practical to spend $20k on a new car.

Look at the big picture. don't live from paycheck to paycheck. If you will it, you can do it. Start saving 'cause no one is going to do it for you. The costs don't add up. That is what I'm telling you for years. There is a formula that the economist are not using to feed to the liberal government or the government is choosing not to tell the people, which I believe the latter. But paying more for a vehicle to save money takes time and in the end, you are saving money by saving on gas. And with the price steadily going up from year to year. It is impossible to save money. The time you would save on the purchase of that vehicle would be on average about 9 years, 3 months. The average life of a person with a vehicle is about 4 years, 2 months. And it use to be back in the 90's only 2 years, 9 months. So where is the savings.

I think the more they build fuel-efficient vehicles the better chance of consumers buying them and eventually that vehicle will go on the market as a used vehicle. Which all means that more and more energy efficient vehicles will be on the road.
