Turning garbage into sugar for fuel

Technology Review -- Waste Management signs a deal with Renmatix to explore making fuel and high-value chemicals from urban waste.

For advanced biofuel companies, there are often questions over how much biomass is available to make biofuels and chemicals. But garbage is often in plentiful supply.

Municipal waste hauler Waste Management yesterday announced a deal to explore making chemicals and fuels from trash with Renmatix, a startup which has a low-cost process for converting biomass into sugars.

Indeed, this enterprise would seem to be an idea that certainly needs exploring if the exploring is done by private enterprise.

We already burn waste in our area to create electricity. Now a new recycling program is beginning and this will remove much of the waste, IF - people use it weekly. 12000-13000 homes to be covered, plus businesses and multiple housing.

Seems these folks have solved that technical hurtle. Renewable, carbon absorbing hemp would be an ideal energy source. 1. Annually renewable 2. Higher yield per acre than trees or corn 3. Not a food crop, so won't destabilize food prices 4. Carbon neutral (absorbs carbon during growth and releases it when burned) 5. Grows well in poor soil (doesn't require petrochemical fertilizers or herbicides to out compete weeds). ** Oh, and Waste Management was not controlled by organized crime, they fought against organized crime to gain market share in places like New York.

Better to extract something useful from it before burying it, burning it, or any of the other wasteful things we do with it now. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — produce less garbage!
