US drops 5 to 1,859 rigs exploring for oil, gas

The Associated Press -- HOUSTON -- The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. dropped this week by five to 1,859.

Texas-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes Inc. reported Friday that 1,402 rigs were exploring for oil and 454 were searching for gas. Three were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago, Baker Hughes listed 1,991 rigs.

Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, California lost five rigs and Louisiana dropped three. Colorado declined by two and Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas each lost one.

Pennsylvania added four rigs, while Alaska and West Virginia each gained one. New Mexico, North Dakota and Wyoming were unchanged.

The rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981 and bottomed at 488 in 1999.

NoGas714 said: They probably couldn't get the permits to drill.

No the Wells hit TD(total depth for the under educated) and are tripping out of the hole which can take several days or moving from one drilling from one location to another 10 days- 3 weeks. Permits aren't a holdup.

I still have my API and Amoco training manuals so your "real rookies(includes "Championship authors") can learn what you are talking about; along with the required geology and anatomy text books for those who don't want to look like a total fool.

Probably doesn't truly mean much, but speculators will use this to spike prices.

It is a shell game! Can you guess where the 5 rigs went. And at the same time production is higher?

The full article doesn't say the reason for the drop in oil rigs.

That just opens the door for those that want to blame Obama for the decline, since no reason was given they can make up any reason they want and foist it as a fact.

As witnessed below where a poster is already trying to convince others that Obama is at fault.

And the scary thing is that there are those unthinking masses that will believe that Bull crap.

The rest are probably down for 'maintenance', just like the refineries that they shut down to keep the price up, no no, I mean, to do repairs on of course!

Since Ronnie Reagan brought this chaos(Wall Street) to the oil patch I am not sure we could stand another dose of that, Gas4Gore. I worked my first summer in an oil field in 1967 and worked full time for Amoco, Tenneco and Valero so I know my ass from a hole in the ground.

Comes under the heading of rounding error.

IF Obama wins, number will go down.

IF Obama loses, number will go up!

The only number that really matters is the number drilling for oil. People forget that between 10%(Bakken and Eagle Ford) and 33% (Marcellus) of hydrocarbons produced from an"oil" well are natural gas known a casing head gas. Given the number of "oil wells" being drilled we could not drill another gas well for 5 years and never know the difference. Who knows what the mix will be in the Monterrey shale in Ca. It is bigger than either the Bakken or the Eagle Ford.

Somebody has to keep the evil oil companies in the news to pacify the oil hating crowd. This story is a waste of effort.

That tiny change in rig count is nothing. With nat gas prices so low and drilling budgets getting cut I would expect a larger decline.

Rig count is irrelevant. Why? Horizontal drilling (which can replace 10 rigs) and fracking (which increases production of existing and new wells.
